How much extra should I allow for batting and backing?

Backing must be at least 10" wider and 10" longer than the quilt top (so an extra 5"/10cm on all sides). This allows the clamps to hold the quilt in place on the frame. It is far better to have too much than not enough!

Wadding/batting should be at least 4" wider than the quilt top all round.

How do I work out how many square feet my quilt top is?

Measure the length and width of your quilt and multiply these together. Divide this number by 144 to get the square foot measurement of your quilt.

For example, if your quilt is 80" by 63" multiply 80 x 63 = 5040

5040÷144=35 square feet.

And depending on the level of quilting you have selected, this example is based on basic medium stipple, the end sum would be:

35 square feet x $3.50 per square foot = $122.50.
